Someone Told Me Handwriting Gratitude Works Better Than Typing It. So I Went Looking for the Study.
What I found about paper, memory, and the grooves we wear into our own thinking.
I was in a mindset mastery course. We were talking about the words we reach for without noticing, the ones that quietly tilt a thought negative before it's even finished.
Then came a claim I accepted instantly: writing your gratitude statements by hand is more impactful than typing them.
Of course it is, I thought. I already knew that.
That should have been my first clue. When something confirms what you already believe, you don't examine it. You just nod.
So this time I went looking for the study.
Why I believed it so fast
I'd had my own evidence for years, and it's a small, silly thing you'll recognize immediately.
I seldom misspell a word by hand. I mistype constantly.
Turns out those are two different categories, and the difference is more interesting than the joke.
A typo is a slip of the hand. The term specifically excludes errors of ignorance, which is what a spelling mistake actually is. Most typos are simple duplication, omission, substitution, or a transposition error, where two letters swap places. That one usually happens because your hands arrived out of order, and it shows up most often between letters typed by different hands.
When I type "teh," I have not forgotten how to spell "the." My left hand simply got there first.
There's a structural reason, and once you see it you can't unsee it. When you write on paper, your hand and your words occupy the same physical space. On a keyboard, your hands work horizontally on the desk while the text appears vertically on a screen. Researchers call this an attentional split, meaning your attention is divided between two locations for the same task.
Your hands are here. Your words are over there. Every keystroke is a tiny act of divided attention, and you stopped noticing decades ago.
What paper actually does
The best study I found on this comes out of the University of Tokyo, and it's clever because of what it holds still.
Umejima and colleagues took 48 university students and split them into three groups. Everyone read the same dialogues and wrote the same appointments into a monthly calendar. One group used a paper notebook. One used an iPad Pro with a stylus. One used a smartphone.
Notice that. The tablet group wrote by hand too. The notebook and the tablet were matched for physical size and layout. Handwriting was held constant. The only thing that really changed was the surface.
After an hour and an interference task, everyone was tested on what they remembered while inside an fMRI scanner, which tracks blood flow to show which parts of the brain are working hardest.
The paper group finished writing significantly faster, about 25% faster, and scored higher on the straightforward recall questions. During retrieval, they showed stronger activation in the hippocampus, a structure central to both memory and spatial navigation, along with the visual and language regions.
The authors' explanation is the part I keep thinking about. On paper, the physical size and location of everything stays put. On a screen, it's variable, scrollable, erasable. Paper gives your brain something extra to hold onto: not just what you wrote, but where you wrote it.
And here's the detail for anyone reading this on a reMarkable. The researchers pulled out the participants who habitually used paper planners but had been assigned to devices, specifically to test whether this was just familiarity. The differences held anyway.
Not habit. The surface.
The part I have to tell you
The single most famous study in this whole area is on shaky ground.
"The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard" (2014) is behind nearly every laptop ban and handwriting post you've ever seen. In 2019, Morehead, Dunlosky and Rawson replicated it directly and added something the original lacked: a group that took no notes at all. The handwriting advantage didn't consistently appear. Neither did a reliable difference between note-takers and the people who wrote nothing.
What survives is smaller and more useful. A 2024 meta-analysis, meaning a study that pools results across many studies, looked at 24 of them and found handwritten notes did produce higher achievement. But the effect was modest, and it depended on one thing: going back and reviewing what you wrote. Test people immediately with no review, and it disappears.
Handwriting doesn't magically install information. It produces something worth returning to.
A word about cursive, and your logo
While I was in here, I checked something I'd assumed for years: that cursive is better for the brain than printing.
It isn't. Researchers at the University of Toronto reviewed the literature specifically looking for that advantage and reported finding no evidence of it, concluding it's unlikely cursive offers more cognitive benefit than printing or the other way around. What is well supported is that handwriting of any kind beats keyboarding in the early grades.
But there's a real loss, and it's not a cognitive one. It's a reading loss.
Cursive was dropped from the Common Core standards in 2010 and 41 states followed. A Harvard historian discovered that two-thirds of the students in her seminar could not read cursive at all. Twenty-seven states have since passed laws putting it back.
Here's why this lands on your desk and not just in an education debate.
That elegant script font on your logo. The handwritten-style quote graphic. The flowing calligraphy on your invitation or your signature block. There is a meaningful slice of your audience under thirty who cannot read it fluently, and they will not tell you. They'll just scroll.
I say this as someone who has loved beautiful lettering my whole career. Use the script. Just don't let it carry information anyone needs.
Now the part I actually wanted to know
Memory is one thing. What about the things we've told ourselves so many times they stopped feeling like opinions?
I picture it as a record album. Every play wears the groove a little deeper. Play it enough and the needle drops into that track automatically, and it doesn't matter whether the song is true. "I'm not the kind of person who." "I always." "I never." The groove doesn't check.
That metaphor is right about the deepening. It's wrong about one thing, and the correction is the most hopeful thing I found.
A vinyl groove is permanent. Memory isn't.
There's a process called memory reconsolidation. When you retrieve a stored memory, it doesn't simply play back. It becomes temporarily unstable, open to modification, before it gets re-stored. Researchers describe memories not as fixed recordings but as dynamic, and describe retrieval as the moment new experience can interweave with the old and change what you'll recall next time.
Which flips the metaphor. Playing the record isn't only how the groove gets deeper. It's the only moment the groove can be re-cut.
And writing sits right in the middle of it. In one set of four experiments, participants reactivated difficult autobiographical memories by writing a description of each one, then worked to find positive meaning in them. The memories updated. The positivity was still measurable a week later, and still there two months on, with brain scans showing changed patterns across retrievals.
Two details worth keeping. The updating happened only after a delay of about twenty-four hours, not one hour. And what did the work was finding new meaning, not repeating the same words.
Not affirmations on a loop. Reaching for the record, and setting the needle down somewhere new.
What nobody has tested
Now back to the claim that started this.
Nobody has compared handwritten gratitude to typed gratitude. Not in a study I could find, and I looked hard. (If you know of one, let me know.)
The gratitude research is genuinely substantial. Randomized trials on gratitude letters, gratitude journaling, measurable effects on wellbeing. But the variable being tested is always gratitude versus neutral writing. Never pen versus keyboard.
And the wider category is the same. James Pennebaker, who essentially founded expressive writing research, states plainly in his own review that no studies have compared ways of writing on health outcomes. There are two small exceptions, pointing in opposite directions. Brewin and Lennard found writing by hand produced more self-rated disclosure than typing. A later study found longhand and typing roughly equivalent.
So where did the claim come from? Almost certainly from the memory and note-taking research, which is real, carried across into emotional writing, where it hasn't been tested.
Not a lie. A true finding, stretched one domain too far.
What I'm doing with that
I'm keeping the pen.
Not because a study told me to, and I want to be careful here about what my own experience does and doesn't prove.
What I notice is on the reading side. When I read a physical book instead of a screen, I retain more, and I sit with ideas longer, both new ones and ones I've turned over for years. Paper and ink are going to remain my friends. There's a time and place for both, and I use both.
That's an observation, not evidence. But it isn't unrelated either. The Tokyo researchers built their own hypothesis partly on earlier work finding paper better than screens for reading comprehension, for the same reason: physical paper gives you fixed, stable, spatial cues that a screen keeps rearranging.
So my experience may be the same phenomenon showing up on the other side of the pen. Or it may just be what I'm used to. I don't know yet, and neither does anyone else.
The window
I'd have kept believing the gratitude thing forever. It was pleasant, it flattered a preference I already had, and nobody was going to challenge it.
What I gained by checking wasn't a different practice. I still write mine by hand.
What I gained was knowing the difference between a study told me to and I know what paper does for me.
Both are fine reasons. They're just not the same reason, and only one of them should be repeated to someone else as fact.

Definitions
Transposition error. Two letters swapping places, like typing "teh" for "the." Caused by your hands arriving out of order, not by not knowing the word. (Happens to me all the time)
Attentional split. When a task divides your attention between two locations at once. Typing does this structurally: hands horizontal on the desk, words vertical on the screen.
Hippocampus. A structure deep in the brain, central to forming memories and to spatial navigation. That it handles both memory and space is exactly why paper's fixed layout seems to matter.
fMRI. Functional magnetic resonance imaging. A scan that tracks blood flow in the brain to show which regions are working hardest during a task.
Meta-analysis. A study of studies. Researchers pool results across many experiments to see what the whole body of evidence says together.
Memory reconsolidation. The process by which a retrieved memory becomes temporarily unstable and open to being modified before it is re-stored. The reason a belief can be changed rather than only reinforced.
Expressive writing. A research paradigm developed by James Pennebaker in which people write about their deepest thoughts and feelings regarding a difficult experience, typically for fifteen minutes over several days.
